01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
A short walk from Kanegafuchi Station on the Tobu Skytree Line, Sumidaen is known for its tsurigane monaka, a crisp wafer confection moulded into the shape of a temple bell after the local neighbourhood name. Generously filled within fragrant, thin wafers, they deliver a clean, uncloying sweetness. The bean paste comes in 3 varieties: classic ogura red bean, matcha, and yuzu. Ogura provides the comforting, rich flavour of adzuki beans, while yuzu offers an aromatic citrus lift.
Wafers can be chosen in small or large sizes to suit your preference, and buying individual pieces is also possible from 1 item upward. Because each is individually wrapped, the shells resist drying out and travel easily. Boxed selections are available as well, serving as convenient, polished gifts.
While the modest storefront focuses primarily on monaka, seasonal fresh sweets such as sakuramochi, kashiwamochi, and kusamochi make an appearance in spring. Stopping by during a neighborhood walk to pick out 1 favourite flavour is part of the pleasure here.
